Athletics Haile Gebrselassie Hails Sponsors Of Millennium Marathon

Mr Haile Gebrselassie, the Ethiopian Long-distance icon and legend, has commended the various companies and individuals who contributed to the success of the first internationally sanctioned marathon in Ghana.

Mr Gebrselassie, who is also the Race Director of the Millennium Marathon, said participating in sporting activities helped build the mind, kept the body active, and boasted the health of people, which all contributed positively to a country's development.

Mr Gebrselassie said this in Accra when he paid a courtesy calls on Airtel, NIB, Starr FM, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation and Graphic Communications and the Aviation Social Center to show his appreciation for their support in the development of sports in Ghana.

“This is an opportunity for all to grab to exercise their body,” he adviced.

The Millennium Marathon is an international marathon event organised by the Millennium Marathon Sports Ltd.

Ms Rosy Fyn, Director of Marketing, Airtel Ghana, said the Marathon event, which took place on September 5, sought to inspire the youth and help unleash their potentials as well as promote sports and tourism for development.

She said Airtel Ghana was proud of the collaboration and expressed the hope that Ghanaians would continue to support the exercise.

Mr. Ernest Mawuli Agbesi, Managing Director said he was happy to be associated with the event which was very successful and many people participating. He appealed to Ghanaians to cultivate the habits of living healthily so that they become very productive and live longer.

At Starr FM, the manager of the Station, Bola Ray said Ghana was the right choice for the marathon and prayed that it would be better in the years to come.

Mr Vincent Opong Asamoah, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, expressed gratitude to Airtel Ghana for putting in resources to fund the marathon.

He called on other agencies and institutions to emulate Airtel to move sporting activities in the country to the next level.

Airtel Ghana was the major sponsor of the Millennium Marathon which attracted over 15,000 people to the Black Star Square in Accra.

The Ethiopian legend was exclusively interviewed by Kweku Ofosu Asare on GTV and he revealed that Ghana is his second home, as the reception accorded him was very warm.

He hinted that the Millennium Marathon is an avenue to boast tourism and international business.
