International Boxing Federation (IBF) Intercontinental champion Richard 'Azonto' Commey boxed closer to his Commonwealth title dream after a spirited showing over Prince Ofotsu in their African Boxing Union (ABU) championship at the Accra Stadium on Boxing Day.
Commey, who was sharp on the night, especially with his occasional left hooks, dominated from start till his opponent failed to answer the round-eight bell, winning the ABU title.
Ofotsu went down on three occasions – rounds two, three and the four – giving indications of surrendering earlier, but held on till his corner threw in the towel.
The victory sets Commey (17-0), a mandatory challenger, up against Commonwealth Boxing Lightweight champion 'Dirty' Derry Mathews (34-8-2) at Echo Arena, Liverpool, UK, on March 7 next year.
His manager Michael Amoo-Bediako, who is based in the UK, described the bout as a masterpiece, saying, 'It was a good sign for Ghana boxing. Both boxers demonstrated mastery in their respective divisions.
'What we are concentrating on now is the Commonwealth title and we will later target a World title,' he added.
Commey, in a post-match interview said, 'I feel great, I worked so hard for this. I am looking forward to laying a hand on a World title, and when that dream is achieved, I will give back to my community. That is the essence of living; giving back to society.'
Another bout that sent the crowd roaring and most of the time on their feet was the George Krampah and Razak Nettey Featherweight championship, which the former won by a TKO decision.
Earlier, three knockouts were recorded. Victor Kuwornu stopped Kofi Adua in round three of their Lightweight contest, while Richard Dogbenya bowed to Robert Quaye in round four of their lightweight championship.
A new Light heavyweight champion emerged when Emmanuel Anim stopped Atoli Moore in round four after just 1m 22secs.
The bouts were put together by Streetwise Promotions.
