They may have suffered neglect but, Ghana’s physically-challenged athletes continue to send a strong message and make a case for greater attention after claimed Ghana’s first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in Paralympic sports.

Fordjour won Ghana’s first medal at the just-ended Commonwealth Games in New Dehli, India — a bronze in the women’s 1,500m race in the T54 category of the wheelchair competition, and inspired other teammates to add to Ghana’s medal haul.

Three years ago, she made an impressive showing at the All Africa Games in Algiers by grabbing a silver and bronze medal each in the 1,500m and 200m races respectively, a platform that propelled her to international recognition.

Fordour caught national attention in 2003 during the Ghana-Nigeria Friendly Games for the Physically Challenged at the then Kumasi Sports Stadium and became the toast of fans after winning a fistful of medals: gold in 800m and a silver each in 200m and 1,500m.
