Ex-Deputy Youth and Sports Minister has challenged the power of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to revert the Ohene Gyan Sports Stadium to Accra Sports Stadium.
OB Amoah insists it is only the Ministry of Youth and Sports and its affiliate body the National Sports Council that has the power to change the name.
He is not too sure if the Ministry had given that power to the AMA.
The Assembly after its meeting resolved to re-name the sporting edifice Accra Sports Stadium.
AMA boss, Alfred Vanderpuije told Joy News' Elvis Adjetey the decision was in line with the AMA's millennium city project.
According to him, the AMA received countless petitions from people to have the name changed, saying something was taken away from the Gas when the edifice was named Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in 2004.
He said the decision to revert to the Accra Sports Stadium was overwhelming and has no political underpinnings.
The name was changed into Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in 2004 to honour Ghana's first sports administrator Ohene Djan after a recommendation by a presidential committee.
But in a reaction, the former deputy Youth and Sports Minister under whose supervision the name was changed to Ohene Djan Sports Stadium told Joy News the AMA is setting a wrong precedence.
They have no authority to change the name he said, adding the decision could have some ethnic implications.
