Gyan blames Angola boycott on Rennes

Asamoah Gyan claims he skipped Ghana's friendly against Angola because of pressure from his club and has apologised to the GFA for his actions.

The Black Stars striker refused to travel to Luanda for a friendly against 2010 host Angola a day after starting the 2-2 draw against Mali in Kumasi alongside Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari.

The trio have incurred the displeasure of the Ghana Football Association who say they will act appropriately.

Gyan told Peace FM his club Stade Rennes had pleaded to the GFA for him to be excused from the Luanda trip without success.

“I am sorry it happened that way,” he said. “There was too much pressure from the club. They sent two faxes to the GFA pleading for me to be excused but the GFA didn't respond and the pressure on me was too much. I am sorry to the GFA and the coach and Ghanaians. I will write a letter of apology to them.”

The three players simply refused to appear at the airport as their colleagues waited to catch the flight to Luanda.

Two other players Stephen Appiah and Samuel Inkoom had been given permission by Milovan Rajevac to miss the friendly.

The fact that the trio stayed away has led to fears that indiscipline which used to be the scourge of the of the Black Stars in the past could wreck the team again ahead of a busy 2010.
