Rugby star Paul Sackey has, during his three-day visit to Ghana, expressed satisfaction with the level the sport has reached in the country.
The top try-scorer for England, who first interacted with kids, later met government officials and the media to share his opinion and impression about rugby in Ghana.
Speaking to the media at the African Regent hotel in Accra last Friday, Paul Sackey said, “Rugby is a great sport and I would like to see it grow in my country with more talents emerging.”
He disclosed that the purpose of his trip was to see what was already in place and having realized that there was enough passion for the game of rugby, he would do his best to promote it.
He further revealed that he had promised the Minister of Education, Science and Sports that he would be back not only to form a team, but to exploit other avenues to make the game more popular in Ghana.
DAILY GUIDE SPORTS gathered that the Ministry of Sports, in collaboration with the National Sports Council (NSC) had given their word to Paul Sackey that they would like to see the effort of the athlete before they could also encourage him, as it was possible to also build a rugby stadium and name it after the Ghanaian superstar.
According to Ms Gifty Annan Myers, Chairperson of the Ghana Rugby Association (GRA), her outfit had started a community rugby development programme.
She observed that the tournament Ghana just hosted had posed a challenge to government to put in place facilities for the sport, adding that Paul Sackey's visit had improved the image of the rugby.
“We only need the networking in place with Paul coming to form a rugby team.
We will seek for sponsorship because looking at things it seems the government would not be very happy with a Nigerian coach to handle Ghana team,” she noted.
