DStv has announced a new subscription structure in Ghana, introducing a dedicated sports package costing GH¢250 a month as the pay-TV operator seeks to make its content more affordable for subscribers.
The new packages will take effect on November 5, 2026, replacing the existing Padi, Access, Family, Compact, Compact Plus and Premium subscriptions with four options: Starter, Select, Sports and Ultimate.
The announcement was made at a joint press conference involving the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations and representatives of Canal+, DStv's parent company.
MultiChoice Ghana Chief Executive Officer Alex Okyere acknowledged the Ministry's role in discussions leading to the new pricing structure, saying the engagement had focused on improving value for consumers.
“Honourable Minister, let me begin by acknowledging your leadership and your support throughout this journey. You have kept the interests of Ghanaian consumers firmly in the conversation,” Okyere said.
He added that the Ministry had challenged the company to consider what better value should mean for subscribers and their families.
Okyere also thanked officials of the Ministry, the National Communications Authority (NCA) and Canal+ leadership for their contributions to the process.
Under the revised structure, the Starter package will cost GH¢50 per month, Select GH¢100, Sports GH¢250 and Ultimate GH¢570.
The changes include price reductions across several tiers, with the new Sports package expected to appeal particularly to football supporters seeking access to major European competitions.
The new Sports package will provide access to DStv's football portfolio, including the English Premier League, UEFA Champions League, La Liga and Serie A.
It will also include football coverage on ESPN, UFC content and selected entertainment channels available through lower-tier subscriptions.
At GH¢250 a month, the package represents a significant reduction from the GH¢563 previously charged for Compact Plus, which subscribers needed to access DStv's full football offering.
The move could provide some relief for Ghanaian football fans who have faced rising subscription costs while trying to follow major European leagues and competitions.
The Starter package, priced at GH¢50 monthly, will offer 90 channels, including Akwaaba Magic, Novelas+, Africa Magic Epic, Cartoon Network, Zee World and MNet Movies Legends.
Subscribers will also receive access to all La Liga matches, one Premier League match each week and free-to-air channels such as TV3, UTV and Adom.
DStv says the package offers an alternative to its former Access subscription, which cost GH¢98 a month.
The Select package will cost GH¢100 monthly and feature 123 channels, including MNet Movies, Africa Magic Showcase and CNN. It will also include WWE wrestling and other entertainment content.
Select is positioned as a replacement for the former Family package, which cost GH¢188 a month.
At the top of the new structure, the Ultimate package will combine sports and entertainment content, including premium offerings such as golf, Formula 1, MotoGP and rugby.
The package will cost GH¢570 per month, down from GH¢854 for the existing Premium subscription.
During the announcement, a Canal+ representative acknowledged the role of the Ministry and the NCA in the discussions that led to the revised packages.
The representative said the engagement had centred on consumer interests and the need to improve the value subscribers receive for their money.
The company also highlighted the varied entertainment needs of households, from local dramas and children's programmes to films and live sports.
The new structure is intended to give subscribers more flexibility to choose packages that suit their budgets and viewing preferences.
All four packages will become available under the revised pricing structure from November 5, 2026.
