Ghana football legend Malik Jabir has questioned Kurt Okraku’s reported ambition to seek a third term as president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), arguing that his tenure should be judged by the trophies won by the national teams.
The GFA amended its constitution at its 2025 Congress to increase the presidential term limit from two terms to three, potentially allowing Okraku, who took office in 2019, to seek re-election beyond his current tenure.
However, Jabir has expressed concern about the extension of leadership tenures in football administration, insisting that the focus should be on achievements rather than the number of years spent in office.
“What third term? Look, any association that keeps changing its term of office means maybe we are not too serious,” the former Asante Kotoko player and coach told Angel FM.
Jabir argued that Okraku would have enjoyed greater support to remain in office if Ghana had won major trophies during his presidency.
“I tell you, if Okraku had won all the cups we need by now, I don’t think anybody would want him to go,” he said.
The veteran football figure also questioned Ghana’s lack of major silverware during Okraku’s tenure, expressing frustration with the Black Stars’ struggles despite changes to the team’s technical leadership.
“But he hasn’t won even one. Even sometimes it’s difficult to beat a team with seven coaches. What are we waiting for?” he added.
Meanwhile, Samuel Annim Addo, Ralph Gyambrah, Elloeny Amande and former Black Stars captain Andre Ayew have expressed interest in contesting the GFA presidency in 2027.
Former GFA vice-president George Afriyie, who has also been linked with the race, is yet to make a decision on whether to contest.
