Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams says any foreign coach appointed to lead the Black Stars must spend more time in Ghana to improve the national team's development.

Ghana are searching for a successor to Carlos Queiroz, who left his post following the team's disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is expected to appoint a new head coach before the final round of qualifiers against Ivory Coast and The Gambia.

Speaking in an interview with Citi FM, Adams said the government had communicated its expectations to the GFA as discussions over Queiroz's replacement continue.

“In our engagement [with the GFA], we indicated that our coach should also be interested in spending time in Ghana,” he said.

“You can’t have a national team coach who visits the country only when the team is coming to play a competition. Then you are not a national team coach.

“The coach must spend more time here and maybe go to Europe to also scout there from time to time,” Adams added.

The minister's comments underline the importance of having a coach who is closely involved in Ghanaian football and can monitor the progress of players in the domestic league.

Meanwhile, an interim technical team is expected to take charge of the Black Stars for their double-header against Somalia next month at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Reports have linked Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren, Godwin Attram and Ibrahim Tanko with roles in the interim setup.

Ghana sit bottom of Group C without a point after losing their opening two qualifying matches and face a difficult task to secure a place at the 2027 AFCON.

The Black Stars are seeking a return to the continental tournament after missing the 2025 edition in Morocco.
