The Metro Detroit Golden Gloves boxing team from the United States have arrived in Accra ahead of an international friendly tournament against Ghana’s Black Bombers on Saturday, 10 October.

The visiting team arrived on Wednesday evening and were welcomed by Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) First Vice-President Nii Gonti Adjor I, also known as Nii Adama Addy, and former GBF president George Lamptey.

The 10-bout contest, dubbed Fist of Fury 2026 Fight Night, will take place at the Bukom Boxing Arena, with 20 boxers expected to compete. The event will also feature exhibition bouts involving juvenile boxers.

Metro Detroit Golden Gloves franchise holder Ansel Stewart believes Ghana provides an ideal environment for the visiting boxers to test themselves against quality opposition.

“Ghana is the best place for our boxers to get good competition,” Stewart said.

Metro Detroit Golden Gloves president and team leader Katealia Chambers said the team's first visit to Ghana was an opportunity to compete and gain valuable experience.

Speaking after arriving at the Accra International Airport, Chambers said the team was looking forward to the challenge of facing the Black Bombers.

Nii Adama Addy, who led the delegation that welcomed the Americans, urged boxing fans to turn out in large numbers to support the event and witness what he expects to be an exciting night of amateur boxing.

He said the Black Bombers had prepared thoroughly for the contest and were determined to win all 10 bouts against their visitors.

“We have both prepared our boxers well and the ring will decide, but we, the Black Bombers, want to win all 10 bouts to give our boxers the winning mentality,” he said.

Addy also welcomed the opportunity to host the American team, stressing the importance of securing more international contests for Ghanaian boxers.

“We are very glad to host them because we need more fights with unknown opponents to toughen our boys for the Olympic Games in LA in the USA,” he added.

The tournament is expected to provide both teams with an opportunity to assess their boxers against unfamiliar opponents while giving fans in Accra a chance to watch international amateur boxing.

Organisers have called on boxing enthusiasts to support the event at the Bukom Boxing Arena, welcoming the visiting delegation to Ghana with the local expressions “Oobake” and “Akwaaba”, both conveying a message of welcome.
