Ghana’s Black Queens made a strong start to their 2028 Olympic Games qualifying campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over Mauritius in the first leg of their second-round tie on Thursday, 8 October.

Head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren made several changes to his regular defensive setup, handing a debut to Margaret Agyapomaa, who partnered Diana Amoako at centre-back.

Afi Amenyeku started in goal, while Comfort Yeboah and Benedicte Simon operated as the full-backs.

Jennifer Cudjoe, Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah and Evelyn Badu formed the midfield, with Abigail Kim leading the attack alongside Alice Kusi and Stella Nyamekye.

Ghana took a little time to settle into the game but broke the deadlock after 16 minutes.

Nyamekye was released down the right before sending a low cross into the box, where Kim was on hand to finish from close range and put the Black Queens ahead.

Ghana doubled their advantage nine minutes later when Kusi converted from Yeboah’s precise cross.

Mauritius managed to withstand further pressure for a period, but the Black Queens eventually found a third goal before half-time.

Yeboah was involved again, this time supplying Simon, who produced a superb finish into the top-left corner to give Ghana a commanding 3-0 lead.

Bjorkegren made changes at the start of the second half, introducing Nancy Amoh, Josephine Bonsu and Zakaria Ajegipina as Ghana continued to control proceedings.

The Black Queens dominated the second half but were unable to add to their three-goal advantage, leaving them in a strong position ahead of the return fixture.

The second leg will be played at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, 13 October.

The winners of the tie will progress to the third qualifying round, where they will meet either Uganda or Zambia.

Uganda hold the advantage in that tie after beating Zambia 2-1 in the first leg.
