Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) vice-president George Afriyie says his priority is to improve Ghana football rather than pursue the presidency of the association.
Afriyie, who lost to Kurt Okraku in the 2019 GFA presidential election, has been mentioned as a potential candidate to lead the association in the next election.
But Afriyie says he is not driven by a desire to occupy the top position at the GFA.
“I’m not desperate to become Ghana Football Association president. I’m desperate to get the best for Ghana football,” he told Sporty FM.
His comments come amid growing calls for GFA president Kurt Okraku to resign following Ghana’s poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Ghana have lost their opening two Group C matches against Ivory Coast and The Gambia, leaving the Black Stars without a point.
Afriyie also questioned the implementation of some of the commitments made under Okraku’s administration, including proposals to improve infrastructure for Colts football and establish partnerships between Ghana Premier League clubs and grassroots teams.
The former GFA vice-president has called for wider structural reforms, arguing that changes are needed to strengthen the administration and development of football in Ghana.
The next GFA presidential election is scheduled for October 2027.
