Accra Sports Stadium is 'our Wembley' and should be renovated, not demolished – Yaw Preko

Former Ghana international Yaw Preko has dismissed calls for the demolition of the Accra Sports Stadium, insisting the country's most iconic football venue should be renovated rather than torn down.

Debate over the future of the stadium has intensified in recent weeks following concerns about its condition, with some critics describing the facility as a "death trap" after a recent inspection.

However, Preko believes the stadium's historical significance means it should be preserved and upgraded instead of being replaced.

Speaking after the Black Stars Legends' 6-3 defeat to UMB Speed Stars at the Adjiringano Astro Turf, the former Ghana forward likened the venue to England's national stadium.

"The Accra Sports Stadium is our Wembley. We can't demolish it, but we can break some places and add other things," Preko told reporters.

The former Anderlecht and Fenerbahçe striker said authorities should focus on identifying areas that need reconstruction while maintaining the stadium's identity and heritage.

Despite concerns over its state, the Accra Sports Stadium remains approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host international fixtures, with Ghana set to use the venue for upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches.
