Ipswich Town manager Gary O'Neil has backed Abdul Fatawu Issahaku after the Ghana winger was sent off in Saturday's 1-0 Premier League defeat by Everton, describing him as a "great addition" despite the costly dismissal.

The 22-year-old, who joined Ipswich from Leicester City this summer, was shown a second yellow card in the 67th minute after being booked for diving. He had received his first caution in the 35th minute.

Issahaku's dismissal left Ipswich to finish the match with 10 men as Everton secured victory.

Despite the setback, O'Neil said the winger's performances since arriving at Portman Road had been encouraging, while acknowledging there were lessons to learn.

"I've spoken to him; he's a young lad, you can see he is anticipating some contact," O'Neil told Premier League Productions.

"I've seen them given and I've seen them not given.

"He understands the importance of him being on the pitch and us keeping 11 on the pitch, but he has been a great addition."

Issahaku has made five appearances for Ipswich and has contributed one assist since joining the club.

The winger is expected to link up with Ghana later this month for the Black Stars' 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Ivory Coast and The Gambia, before a friendly against Morocco in October.
