U-20 Women's World Cup:Black Princesses ready to respond after 'weird' defeat to Ecuador - Charles Sampson

Black Princesses head coach Charles Sampson says his side have put their opening defeat at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup behind them and are ready to revive their campaign against South Korea.

Ghana suffered a disappointing 3-0 loss to Ecuador in their opening Group D match in Poland, extending concerns over the team's struggles at the tournament, where they have failed to progress beyond the group stage in their last seven appearances.

Sampson described the defeat as a "weird" game, admitting he found it difficult to explain why his team's usual strengths failed to emerge.

"The first game actually was a weird game, weird in many senses," he said.

"What we normally do at ease did not work, and it can also be so many factors, difficult to pinpoint."

Despite the setback, the coach said his players had recovered from the disappointment and were fully focused on the next challenge.

"I can say confidently that the girls have overcome the last game shock and the emotions in it, so now it looks like we are ready to go," he added.

Sampson acknowledged that both he and his players were affected by the defeat but believes the squad have rediscovered their confidence.

"The girls were all down, just like myself, in the first game. We have shaken it up now; we are ready to go and redeem ourselves."

Ghana now face South Korea in a must-win group-stage encounter as they attempt to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
