President Mahama awards $60,000 to Medeama, Nations FC and Ampem Darkoa

President John Mahama has presented a combined $60,000 to Medeama SC, Nations FC and Ampem Darkoa Ladies in recognition of their domestic achievements and participation in continental competitions following an official visit on Tuesday to the Jubilee House on Tuesday, September 8.

Ghana Premier League champions Medeama received $30,000 to support their campaign in the CAF Champions League after securing qualification through their league triumph last season.

The Tarkwa-based club are currently competing against DR Congo giants TP Mazembe in the preliminary round of the competition. Medeama suffered a 1-0 defeat in the first leg at the TNA Stadium on Sunday but remain hopeful of overturning the deficit in the return fixture in Lubumbashi.

The Ghanaian champions must secure victory away from home to advance to the next stage of Africa's premier club tournament.

MTN FA Cup holders Nations FC were also awarded $20,000 ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup campaign. The financial support was announced when officials of the club paid a courtesy call on President Mahama at the Jubilee House.

Nations FC earned the right to represent Ghana in the Confederation Cup after lifting the FA Cup last season. However, they face an uphill task after losing 1-0 to Mali's FC Diarra in the first leg of their preliminary-round tie on 5 September.

The Premier League side will host the return leg in Accra this weekend and will be aiming to use home advantage to overturn the deficit and keep their continental hopes alive.

Women's Premier League champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies received the remaining $10,000 following their successful domestic season and participation in the WAFU B Women's Champions League qualifiers.

Ampem Darkoa secured qualification for the regional tournament after winning the Ghana Women's Premier League but narrowly missed out on a place in the CAF Women's Champions League after losing to Nigeria's Edo Queens in the WAFU B final.

Despite their failure to reach the continental showpiece, the club's efforts at both the domestic and regional levels have been recognised through financial support from the President.
