Free-agent Jordan Ayew close to Sheffield United move after Leicester City exit

Ghana captain Jordan Ayew is reportedly closing in on a move to English Championship side Sheffield United after leaving Leicester City at the end of last season.

The 35-year-old has been without a club since departing the Foxes following their relegation from the Championship, but reports in the United Kingdom suggest the Blades are now leading the race for his signature.

Blackburn Rovers and Burnley are also believed to have shown interest in the experienced forward, although Sheffield United are understood to be the favourites to secure a deal.

Ayew made 42 Championship appearances during the 2025-26 campaign, scoring six goals and providing three assists. He started 24 league matches as Leicester struggled in a season that ultimately ended in relegation.

Sheffield United have reportedly turned to the free-agent market as they seek to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season.

The Ghana international's versatility is seen as a key asset, with Ayew capable of playing through the centre or on either wing.

His potential arrival would also bring a wealth of experience, having spent more than a decade in English football. Since leaving French side Marseille, Ayew has featured for Aston Villa, Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Leicester City across the Premier League and Championship.

Reports suggest the former Black Stars captain could be officially unveiled by Sheffield United on Friday, 11 September, which coincides with his 35th birthday.

Ayew is also expected to be included in Ghana's squad for this month's 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Côte d'Ivoire and The Gambia.
