Black Stars: GFA backs Carlos Queiroz despite style concerns

The Ghana Football Association's communications director, Henry Asante Twum, says keeping Carlos Queiroz as Black Stars head coach is the right decision, insisting that results matter more than playing attractive football.

The GFA has confirmed the 73-year-old Portuguese will remain in charge as Ghana begin their bid to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with Ivory Coast and The Gambia awaiting in their opening qualifiers later this month.

Speaking to Asempa FM, Asante Twum argued that supporters ultimately judge teams by victories rather than style.

"People will remember you for your last result and not your style, so for me, getting results is more important than playing stylish football," he said.

He maintained that winning matches and trophies should take precedence, even if it means adopting a more cautious approach.

"If you play attractive attacking football and you lose 5-0, and you play a defensive, boring style but win 1-0, take your three points and win a trophy, which is better?" he asked.

Queiroz took charge of Ghana after Otto Addo was dismissed following a difficult run of results, leading the Black Stars into the 2026 World Cup.

At the tournament, Ghana finished third in their group before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32.

His continued appointment comes after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the previous Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, increasing the pressure to secure a return to the continental showpiece in 2027.

Ghana's qualifying campaign begins away to Ivory Coast at Stade de la Paix in Bouake on 24 September, before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later.
