Former Hearts of Oak Board Secretary Ernest Thompson has criticised ex-captain Yaw Amankwah Mireku for publicly challenging former club CEO Harry Zakour over claims surrounding a $100,000 bonus following the club’s historic CAF Champions League triumph in 2000.
Thompson described Mireku’s decision to call Zakour a liar on air as “childish”, arguing that the former Hearts captain should have been more mindful of the club’s image when discussing internal matters publicly.
Speaking in an interview with Sportstiger on Original TV, Thompson said Mireku should have prioritised protecting the reputation of Hearts of Oak rather than attacking individuals through the media.
“He said former Hearts captain Yaw Amankwah Mireku was childish to come on air to call former Hearts CEO Harry Zakour a liar.”
Thompson maintained that former players and officials of the club have a responsibility to protect the image of Hearts of Oak, particularly when discussing events from the club’s celebrated history.
According to him, disagreements over past events should not lead to public attacks on personalities associated with the club.
“He said the former captain should have protected the image of the club in public rather than attacking personalities in the media which disgrace the club,” the report stated.
Thompson’s comments come after former Hearts of Oak defender and captain Yaw Amankwah Mireku disputed claims that the club’s players received $100,000 following their historic CAF Champions League success in 2000.
Mireku insisted that none of the players received such an amount, challenging the version of events previously presented by former Hearts CEO Harry Zakour.
The 2000 CAF Champions League triumph remains a defining moment for Hearts of Oak, with the Phobians defeating Esperance of Tunisia in the final to secure the continental title.
The disagreement over the reported bonus has now brought former club officials and players into a public exchange, with Thompson urging former players to be more careful about how they address issues concerning the club.
