Berekum West MP calls for Accra Sports Stadium to be rebuilt after inspection tour

The Member of Parliament for Berekum West, Dickson Kyere-Duah, has called for the Accra Sports Stadium to be completely rebuilt, arguing that extensive structural problems make further refurbishment an ineffective long-term solution.

The lawmaker made the remarks after touring the facility and assessing its condition ahead of Ghana's hosting of the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations and upcoming international fixtures.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Kyere-Duah said the stadium often appears impressive during matches, particularly under floodlights, but a detailed inspection revealed significant challenges that require urgent attention.

“When you come here on match days, especially matches that are played under floodlights, you see the place being so magnificent. But when you take a deep tour, as we've done, then you realise we have a very long way to go, especially with the upcoming AFCON qualifiers underway. So we need to respond as quickly as possible,” he said

He stressed the need for swift intervention, noting that Ghana must ensure its sporting infrastructure meets the standards required to host major continental competitions.

Kyere-Duah, however, believes that continued rehabilitation works may not be the most practical solution. Instead, he proposed demolishing the existing structure and constructing a new modern stadium befitting the country's capital city.

“For me, in the short and medium term, I'm not thinking about the long term. We should be thinking about replacing this facility entirely, pulling everything down and building a modern stadium that befits the status of Ghana's capital, Accra, to host FIFA, CAF-sanctioned matches,” he stated.

Describing the state of the facility as worrying, the MP urged authorities to act quickly to address the situation.

“It’s so terrible, and I think we need to work very, very fast,” he added.

The Accra Sports Stadium remains one of Ghana's most iconic sporting venues and has hosted numerous domestic and international matches over the years. However, concerns over its condition have intensified amid preparations for future continental competitions.

With AFCON qualifiers and the U-20 AFCON on the horizon, attention is expected to focus on whether the necessary upgrades can be completed in time or whether more extensive redevelopment plans will be considered.
