Asante Kotoko board could quit over financial pressure - Sarfo Duku

Former Asante Kotoko Communications Director Sarfo Duku has warned that members of the club’s Board of Directors could be forced to reconsider their positions if supporters fail to provide the financial backing needed to sustain the club.

The comments come amid growing discussions about the financial demands of running one of Ghana’s biggest and most supported football clubs.

The Asante Kotoko Board of Directors, constituted in February 2026, is chaired by Joshob Construction Chief Executive Officer James Osei Brown. He is supported by Rocksure CEO Kwasi Osei Ofori as Vice-Chairman, while Rigworld Group Founder and CEO Kofi Amoa-Abban is also a member.

Speaking to Luv FM, Duku stressed that the financial responsibilities associated with managing a club of Kotoko’s size are enormous and require significant support from sponsors, external partners and the club’s supporters.

He particularly highlighted the personal financial burden that board members could face if the club does not receive adequate backing.

“Otherwise, their wives will advise them to leave,” Duku cautioned.

According to him, supporters have a major role to play in helping the club generate revenue, particularly through strong matchday attendance.

Duku believes filling stadiums for Kotoko games would not only increase gate proceeds but could also strengthen the club’s appeal to potential sponsors and commercial partners.

“The financial obligation in running a football club like Kotoko is so huge that without external support or without support from supporters, it’s difficult,” he said.

He also questioned how the club could consistently recruit quality players and compete in the transfer market without sufficient financial resources.

“How do you get quality players if you don’t have money?” he asked.

The former communications director urged supporters to look beyond their expectations of success on the pitch and actively contribute to initiatives aimed at improving the club’s financial position.

One initiative he specifically mentioned was the Fabu Census, an official supporters’ database that allows Kotoko fans aged 18 and above to register and make monthly financial contributions to the club.

Duku challenged supporters to examine the level of participation in the initiative and questioned whether enough fans were attending matches regularly.

“We brought the Fabu Census project? How many people have subscribed so far? How many of us attend our matches?” he queried.

He further called on supporters to turn up in large numbers for Kotoko’s matches, arguing that consistent attendance could provide the club with an important source of revenue.

“You don’t need any special thing to come to a Kotoko match. Let us come in our numbers, so that if for nothing at all, they can rely on the gate proceeds to cushion them, and then let’s subscribe to the Fabu Census,” he added.

Asante Kotoko are preparing for the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season, which they will begin with an away fixture against Debibi United.
