Pressure from fans key to football growth - Maxwell Konadu after Black Satellites' WAFU B U-20 exit

Black Satellites head coach Maxwell Konadu has defended the role of fan pressure in football, insisting that public expectations are vital for the game's development despite Ghana's disappointing exit from the 2026 WAFU U-20 Championship.

The Black Satellites bowed out of the tournament in Ivory Coast after finishing third in Group B with just two points from three matches, missing out on a place in the knockout stage.

Ghana's campaign began with a heavy 4-2 defeat to Nigeria before consecutive draws against Burkina Faso (1-1) and Togo (0-0), results that ultimately ended their hopes of progressing.

Speaking to Citi Sports after the team's return to Ghana, Konadu acknowledged the disappointment surrounding the team's performance but stressed that criticism from supporters should be embraced as part of football rather than taken personally.

“Without pressure from fans, football won’t get to where it needs to be. The only thing is that some people take things too personally,” he said.

The former Black Stars assistant coach noted that scrutiny from supporters is unavoidable, particularly in a football-loving nation like Ghana where expectations for the national teams remain high. He believes such pressure can serve as a motivating force to raise standards when approached with the right mindset.

Following their early elimination, the Black Satellites will now shift their attention to preparations for the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, which Ghana is set to host as part of the country's 70th anniversary celebrations.
