GFA Executive Council to review Carlos Queiroz's technical report today, future decision expected

The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is expected to make a key decision on the future of Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz when it meets on Friday to review the team's technical report following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Portuguese tactician, who took charge of the senior national team in April after replacing Otto Addo, led Ghana to an impressive Round of 32 finish at the tournament in North America—the Black Stars' best World Cup performance since reaching the quarter-finals in South Africa in 2010.

Ghana opened their Group L campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama before holding England to a goalless draw.

Although the Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final group match, they advanced to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams.

Their campaign, however, ended in the Round of 32 following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia.

After the World Cup, Queiroz submitted his technical report to the GFA, with the Executive Council set to assess the document during its meeting. The gathering is also expected to determine whether the experienced coach will continue in his role ahead of Ghana's upcoming assignments.

Speculation over Queiroz's future intensified after Ghana's elimination when a social media post from the 73-year-old was widely interpreted as a farewell message.

However, the former Portugal and Iran coach later dismissed reports of his resignation, explaining in a viral interview that the post was simply an expression of gratitude to Ghanaians for their support throughout the tournament.

President John Dramani Mahama has publicly backed Queiroz to remain in charge, expressing confidence that continuity could help the Black Stars achieve greater success in future competitions.

"I'm sure that if we keep this team, and we persuade the coach Carlos Queiroz to continue to work with the team, by the time of the next AFCON and the next World Cup, we'll have a team that can claim the championship in either of those two competitions," Mahama stated during an inspection at the Ho Sports Stadium.

Should Queiroz remain at the helm, his immediate focus will be guiding Ghana through the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Black Stars have been drawn in a qualifying group alongside Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia and Somalia, with their campaign scheduled to begin in September as they seek a return to the continental tournament after missing out on the previous edition.
