2026 Commonwealth Games: Joseph Paul Amoah qualifies for 200m final after thrilling semi-final win

Ghana’s sprint sensation Joseph Paul Amoah has booked his place in the men’s 200m final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after producing a stunning performance in the semi-finals on Thursday, July 30.

Amoah, competing in Semi-final 2, delivered a composed and powerful display, navigating the bend brilliantly before accelerating strongly in the final stretch to secure victory.

The 29-year-old clocked a season’s best time of 20.24 seconds, edging Jamaica’s Jevaughn Powell by the narrowest of margins. Although both athletes were awarded the same official time, Amoah’s marginal advantage saw him claim one of the automatic qualification places for the final.

The national record holder has been in excellent form throughout the competition, having earlier won his first-round heat in 20.36 seconds. His consistency has placed him among the favourites heading into the medal showdown.

However, Ghana’s other competitors could not join him in the final. James Dadzie finished fourth in Semi-final 1 after recording 20.52 seconds, narrowly missing out on qualification, while Mustapha Bokpin placed seventh in Semi-final 3 with a time of 20.65 seconds.

Amoah will now look to go one step further than his achievement at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where he won bronze in the same event.

With his current form and confidence, the Ghanaian sprinter will be aiming to make history by capturing gold in Glasgow.
