2026 WAFCON: I really believe in this group of girls - Black Queens coach Kim Lars Björkegren

Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has backed his players to make a strong start to their 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign as Ghana prepare to face debutants Cape Verde in their opening Group D fixture.

Ghana will begin their tournament journey today at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, with the Swedish tactician expressing confidence in the team’s ability to compete at the highest level.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Björkegren praised the commitment, tactical discipline and determination of his squad, insisting the Black Queens are ready to showcase an attacking brand of football.

"We will see a Black Queens team that will go for the attack. I will say we are the best high-pressing team in Africa. I know we have a strong defence. I really believe in this group of girls. They will do everything to win the game," the Swedish coach said.

The coach believes Ghana’s combination of defensive solidity and aggressive pressing will be key as they aim to secure a winning start against the tournament newcomers.

After their opening fixture, the Black Queens will face Cameroon on Sunday, August 2, 2026, before concluding their group-stage campaign against Mali on Thursday, August 6, 2026.

Ghana, who finished third at the previous edition of the WAFCON, are aiming for a deeper run this time around. With qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil also at stake, the Black Queens will be determined to make a strong impression on the continental stage.
