Carlos Queiroz deserves the chance to stay as Black Stars coach - Kofi Adams

Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, believes Carlos Queiroz deserves the opportunity to continue as head coach of the Black Stars following Ghana’s encouraging performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Portuguese tactician was appointed on a short-term contract in April after the dismissal of Otto Addo in March, with the primary task of guiding Ghana through the World Cup campaign in North America.

Despite having limited time to prepare the team, Queiroz achieved a significant milestone by leading the Black Stars to the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time since the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

However, uncertainty has surrounded the future of the 73-year-old coach following Ghana’s elimination from the competition.

Speaking in an interview with TV3, Kofi Adams, who is also the Member of Parliament for Buem, called for Queiroz to be given more time and support, insisting that the veteran coach has demonstrated the importance of quality leadership on the touchline.

“We should give Carlos Queiroz the opportunity to stay a bit longer. He has proven that a coach matters,” Mr Adams said.

Under Queiroz, Ghana opened their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over Panama before holding former champions England to a goalless draw.

The Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat against Croatia in their final Group C match but still progressed to the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams.

Ghana’s run in the tournament ended at the knockout stage after a 1-0 loss to Colombia.

With the World Cup now behind them, the Black Stars will turn their attention to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where they have been placed in Group C alongside Côte d’Ivoire, Somalia and The Gambia.

The qualification campaign is set to begin in September.
