Ghana Para Sports is set to make history at the 2026 Commonwealth Games with para swimmer Promise Wonder Atsu Aheto becoming the first Ghanaian para swimmer to qualify for the prestigious multi-sport event.

Aheto will represent Ghana at the Games, scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, 2026, marking a significant milestone for para sports development in the country.

The talented swimmer secured his place through a bipartite qualification slot following his classification and impressive performances at the World Para Swimming Series held in Australia in February 2026. His qualification was underlined by personal-best performances in two events, recording a time of 1:38.58 in the Men’s 100m Breaststroke S9 and 31.72 seconds in the Men’s 50m Freestyle S13.

These results earned Aheto eligibility to compete in either event at the Commonwealth Games, providing Ghana with its first-ever representation in para swimming at the competition.

The achievement represents a landmark moment for Ghana Para Sports and reflects the steady growth of para-athletics in the country. It also highlights the impact of coordinated efforts among sporting authorities, administrators, and stakeholders committed to expanding opportunities for athletes with disabilities.

Several sports administrators have been credited for their role in supporting Aheto’s journey to qualification. Among them are Ghana Olympic Committee President Richard Akpokavie, 2026 Commonwealth Games Chef de Mission Farida Ayishatu Idriss, and the leadership of Ghana Para Swimming.

The National Paralympic Committee of Ghana, led by Samson Deen, alongside Henry Larbi and Majeed Eldeen, has also been praised for providing both administrative and financial support to Aheto and his teammate during their participation in the World Para Swimming Series in Australia.

Their backing proved instrumental in helping the swimmer gain the international exposure and competitive opportunities that ultimately led to his historic qualification.

With the countdown to Glasgow 2026 underway, Aheto’s qualification stands as a source of pride for Ghana and a testament to the growing strength of the country’s para sports movement on the international stage.
