Fred Pappoe backs Black Stars for strong World Cup run if Ghana beat Panama

Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Fred Pappoe, believes the Black Stars can enjoy a deep run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup if they begin their campaign on a winning note.

Ghana, who will be making their fifth appearance at the global showpiece in North America, have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, Pappoe stressed that the team’s opening fixture could define their entire tournament trajectory.

"The way I see the thing is like we are at a barrier, and if we can scale it, there is no limit to how far we can go during the tournament, and the barrier is Panama, and if we can cross that, I believe we can go far with the rest of our group games," he said.

The Black Stars will kick off their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and wrapping up the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

Ahead of the tournament, Carlos Queiroz’s side will step up preparations with international friendlies against Mexico later this month and Wales on June 2.
