The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of two suspects, including an alleged gang leader, in connection with the armed robbery attack on a Berekum Chelsea team bus that led to the death of forward Dominic Frimpong.
The incident happened on the Bibiani–Goaso road last Sunday, shortly after the Ghana Premier League side returned from their fixture against FC Samartex at DUN’s Park.
Armed men are said to have blocked the road and opened fire when the bus driver attempted to reverse after detecting a possible ambush.
In the ensuing panic, players and officials abandoned the vehicle and ran into nearby bushes for safety.
During the escape, 20-year-old Frimpong sustained a gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but was later pronounced dead. Six other players also suffered minor injuries.
Police launched an immediate manhunt following the attack.
In a statement issued on Thursday, April 16, the Police Service said two suspects believed to have been directly involved in the incident and the killing of the Aduana FC loanee had been arrested.
Authorities further disclosed that one of the suspects was injured during an exchange of fire with police intelligence officers and is currently receiving treatment at hospital.
