2026 World Cup: Carlos Queiroz, Fernando Santos, and Paulo Bento shortlisted for Black Stars coaching role - Sources

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is edging closer to appointing a new head coach for the Black Stars, according to local media reports.

The move follows the dismissal of Otto Addo after a run of disappointing results, capped by defeats to Austria and Germany during the March international window.

Reports indicate that the GFA has drawn up a three-man shortlist comprising Carlos Queiroz, Fernando Santos, and Paulo Bento, all of whom bring extensive international experience.

Queiroz, known for his tactical organisation, has managed several national teams, including Portugal and Iran. Santos guided Portugal to their first major trophy at the 2016 European Championship, while Bento, a former South Korea coach, is recognised for his structured, possession-based philosophy.

Sources suggest the shortlisted candidates are being considered as a short-term solution to steady the team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with a more permanent appointment expected later.

In the longer term, Saudi Arabia head coach Hervé Renard is reportedly under consideration as a potential long-term option after the tournament.

The GFA’s approach reflects a two-stage plan: immediate stability in the lead-up to the World Cup, followed by a broader rebuild aimed at restoring the Black Stars’ competitiveness on the global stage.

The association is expected to finalise consultations with the government before making an official announcement.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars are scheduled to regroup in May and will play friendly matches against Mexico and Wales as part of their preparations for the tournament.

Ghana, making their fifth appearance at the World Cup, have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. Their campaign begins on June 17 against Panama, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
