Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has applauded his players’ fighting spirit despite their narrow defeat to Senegal in the semifinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Pharaohs bowed out of the tournament after a 1-0 loss to the Lions of Teranga on Wednesday evening at the Tangier Grand Stadium, with Sadio Mané’s second-half strike proving decisive.

Speaking after the match, Hassan praised his team’s character and commitment, while acknowledging Senegal’s superiority on the night.

"I am really proud of my players who really displayed good character against a tough opponent," he told the media.

"I have just told my players that I am proud of them because they defended the Egyptian flag and the Egyptian people with apt of courage."

The former striker also credited Senegal for their performance, admitting his side were second best.

"Senegal played very well, and I can't take anything away from them as they played well today," Hassan added.

Egypt will now turn their attention to the third-place playoff, where they will face the loser of the semifinal clash between Nigeria and Morocco.
