Former Commonwealth, African, and Ghanaian National Featherweight Champion, Percy Oblitei Commey, has urged the Ghana Boxing Federation to consider appointing former WBA Welterweight Champion Ike “Bazooka” Quartey to a key role within the management, administrative, or technical departments of Ghana’s amateur boxing setup.
In an interview with this portal, Commey — who retired with a record of 34 wins, seven losses, and one draw — said he strongly believes Quartey has the experience and leadership qualities to guide the next generation of Ghanaian boxers to success at major international competitions, including the Commonwealth Games and the Olympic Games.
Commey further suggested that Ike Quartey could work closely with Charles Quartey, the current head coach of the national amateur team, the Black Rockets, to strengthen the technical direction of Ghana Amateur Boxing.
“As a coach myself, I know many of the other coaches would welcome Ike’s involvement,” Commey said, emphasizing that his colleague’s wealth of experience from his world championship days could be invaluable to young boxers.
Reflecting on his own career, Commey recalled sparring sessions with the legendary Azumah “The Professor” Nelson, noting that he held the Commonwealth title during Nelson’s reign as WBC World Champion.
“At that time, I wasn’t given the opportunity,” he said. “If I had been, I believe I could have also won the WBA, WBO, or IBF titles.”
Commey stressed that Ghana’s boxing talent pool remains strong but pointed out that the sport continues to struggle with poor management and a lack of discipline, issues he believes must be addressed for Ghana to reclaim its glory in global boxing.
