Akosombo Hydro Spikers volleyball team emerged champions of the maiden edition of the Thomas Nyarko Ampem Community Volleyball Gala, held in Akosombo, after a commanding 2-0 victory over Osiabura Majesty Spikers in the finals.

South Senchi Hit Spikers secured third place, followed by New Powmu Bridge Spikers in fourth and Anum Mountain Spikers in fifth.

The gala competition, involving over 12 communities, was initiated by the Member of Parliament for the Asuogyaman Constituency, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, with the objective of promoting volleyball as a tool for youth engagement and community development.

The winning team was awarded a trophy and a volleyball, while runners-up and subsequent placements also received prizes in recognition of their participation and performance.

During his closing remarks, Mr Ampem expressed his admiration for the level of talent displayed, stating, “This gala has revealed the depth of potential talent in our communities.”

He noted that three of the four semifinalist teams have access to dedicated volleyball courts, underscoring the role of infrastructure in nurturing sports development.

“I am proud to have personally overseen the construction of volleyball courts at South Senchi and Osiabura,” he added.

He indicated, their success has encouraged him to expand such initiatives if building courts in other underserved communities, to create opportunities and uplift local talent.

Nana Ansah Prem, Chief of Akosombo, called for strengthened collaboration between Mr Ampem and Mr Kenneth Nana Addo, Member of Parliament for Okere Constituency and patron of the Eastern Regional Volleyball Association, to advance the growth and promotion of volleyball in the region.

He also called on youth to harness their energies productively, contributing to ventures that foster community-based economic growth.
