I don't understand why Arsenal failed to extend Thomas Partey contract - William Gallas

Former Arsenal defender William Gallas has voiced his surprise over the club’s decision not to renew midfielder Thomas Partey’s contract.

The Ghana midfielder’s deal with Arsenal expired on June 30, having joined the club on a five-year contract back in 2020.

In response, Arsenal have reportedly moved to sign Brentford’s Christian Norgaard as a potential replacement for Partey.

However, Gallas, who also had stints at Chelsea, expressed disbelief at the decision to let the 32-year-old Partey leave.

“I just don’t understand why Arsenal are signing Christian Norgaard and are letting Thomas Partey go," Gallas, who also played for Chelsea, told Prime Casino, as per the Mirror.

"For me, it doesn’t make sense to then let him leave and spend £10m on a replacement that is a year younger.”

“I think it would have made more sense to keep Partey or sign a youngster, not go like for like with a new player that will have no sell-on value," he added.

Meanwhile, Partey is reportedly attracting interest from Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and clubs in the Saudi Pro League.
