Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, has called for a drastic step in Ghanaian football.
In light of the Black Stars' 2023 Africa Cup of Nations group stage exit, he believes it's time to disband the team.
The Black Stars' performance was underwhelming, with no wins and an early exit, reminiscent of a similar failure in the past.
Sam George has been vocal in his criticism of the Ghana Football Association and the Sports Ministry. He sees their plan to invest heavily in the team despite the country's economic challenges as misguided.
He shared his thoughts during an appearance on Asempa FM, stating, “The Black Stars, let us disband the team. That is my view and I have held this view for long. It will not be the first time.”
He pointed out that Ghana had previously disbanded the team in 2001 and 2002, which led to significant improvements culminating in a successful run at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup.
He also commented on the inconsistency in some players' commitment, mentioning Kevin-Prince Boateng, who had shown renewed interest whenever his career was at a low point.
“It was after we disbanded the Black Stars in 2001 and 2002, we went to the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup.
“Every time Kevin-Prince Boateng’s career drops, you want to play for the Black Stars. The Black Stars is and should be a place where you should feel the pride that you are wearing that jersey.”
Ghana's exit from the Africa Cup of Nations came after a disappointing performance in the group stage. The team finished third in a group that included Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique, losing to Cape Verde and securing only two draws against Egypt and Mozambique. This result left them unable to progress to the Round of 16.
