Nigerian indigenous rapper Olamide Adedeji has pushed back against the stigmatisation of local customs, insisting that African traditions are not inherently evil.
The YBNL label boss made his stance known in a video uploaded by his close friend, actress Sotayo Gaga, on her Instagram page on Wednesday.
Olamide stressed the need to educate the public about the true nature of their heritage. The music executive noted that society has been conditioned to look down on indigenous practices, adding that it is crucial to remind people of their roots.
The rapper proudly declared his Yoruba identity, using a common local skincare item to drive his point home. According to him, if someone offers him traditional black soap, locally known as 'ose dudu,' he will gladly accept it.
He said:
"Promoting the culture and trying to sensitise people that our culture and tradition are not diabolical and should not be demonised, and we are proud of who we are, our culture, and our heritage. I'm a Yoruba boy. If you give me black soap, I will collect it."
