Nigerian filmmaker and producer Biodun Stephen has shared an important message about personal growth, boundaries, and the dynamics of professional relationships.
In a post shared on her Instagram page, accompanied by a series of carousels titled "Dearly BeLoved," she reflected on how people often react when those they once helped begin to succeed.
Stephen noted that being part of someone's beginning does not grant anyone the right to dictate their next chapter. She pointed out that as people grow and their responsibilities change, the access others once enjoyed must also change.
The filmmaker observed that this shift often causes friction, suggesting that what truly troubles people is not the other person's growth, but the fact that it has altered their own privileges. She emphasized that access is not ownership and gratitude is not a lifetime debt.
Drawing from her own experience in the film industry, Stephen mentioned she has opened doors for actors who went on to do wonderful things. She noted that when these actors eventually ask to be booked through their managers, some people take offense. She argued that a manager is not a rejection, but simply structure.
She further addressed the issue of exposure, stating that while a post may have value, it does not always pay the bills. She advised that if someone approaches a business wanting what they sell, they should pay for it, as the sale is what keeps the business alive.
Biodun Stephen also urged people to celebrate those they once helped, respect their boundaries, honor their work, and pay for what they ask for.
She captioned the post with:
"We can be better humans together."
