Nigerian singer and songwriter Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, popularly known as Mayorkun, has shared his thoughts on the pain of losing friends, stating that friendship breakups are harder to deal with than relationship breakups.
He made this known during a recent appearance on the In My Opinion podcast.
Mayorkun explained that people invest more into friendships, noting that unlike romantic relationships, there is no sexual element involved, only genuine companionship and affection.
According to him, one must genuinely like a person before they become a friend, which makes the loss more painful when it ends. He said that while it is easier to find a new romantic partner, finding a new friend is much harder.
The singer also noted that a friendship breakup can make it difficult to open up to new people, except for those who naturally call everyone their friend.
He said:
"Friendship breakups are harder than relationship breakups because you invest more into friendship."
"You are not really getting anything from friendship apart from maybe companionship and all. But in a relationship, there is still a small sexual something inside. In friendship, you must like that person before they become your friend."
"So, if the thing ends, don't worry, you will get a new girlfriend before you get a new friend."
"A friendship breakup makes it hard to want to go into another friendship with someone, except you are the type that calls everyone your friend."
