Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has opened up about her early struggles with fame, revealing that she once denied her identity to strangers who recognised her.
Speaking on an episode of The Boost Podcast, she explained that she found the sudden spotlight overwhelming and wanted to protect her private life.
The 'Essence' crooner recounted how she would be approached at the airport by people who recognised her, and she would deny being the singer. She admitted that she was afraid of losing her secret life and prayed to God not to be put in the spotlight.
Tems, however, noted that she had no choice, but to embrace fame when she could no longer hide.
She said:
"I would go to the airport, and people would say, 'You're Tems.' I would be like, 'No, I'm not Tems.' I was so afraid. I wanted to continue my secret life, and I was like, 'God, please, I don't want to be in the spotlight.'"
