Nigerian comedian and singer, Bowoto Jephthah Oluwatiseyifumi Tanimola, popularly known as Akpororo, has defended comedienne Anita Asuoha, better known as Real Warri Pikin, over her controversial on-stage performance with singer Timaya.
Real Warri Pikin came under heavy criticism after she joined Timaya on stage during his performance at the AFRIMMA Music Fest in Dallas, Texas, shortly after receiving the award for Best Stand-Up Comedian.
During the performance of Timaya's hit song, 'Ukwu', the comedienne jumped on the singer as part of the performance, prompting heavy backlash, with some social media users accusing her of disrespecting her husband.
Real Warri Pikin later apologised to her husband, Ikechukwu, as well as her fans, explaining that she had not known about Timaya's usual stage routine and had only joined the performance because she wanted to enjoy the moment.
Reacting to the backlash in a video, Akpororo urged critics to consider the context of the incident, stressing that Real Warri Pikin is a professional entertainer.
Addressing women who had criticised the comedienne, Akpororo acknowledged that her actions could be viewed differently because she is married.
"To the ladies, she did a mistake. You know why I say to the ladies, she did a mistake? Because she did a mistake as a married woman," he said.
However, he argued that Real Warri Pikin's profession should also be considered, noting that entertainers often engage in physical performances as part of their work.
"This lady is a professional, for crying out loud. She is a comedian, an entertainer," Akpororo said.
He also questioned the intensity of the backlash against the comedienne, particularly those who threatened or severely condemned her over the incident.
"You want to kill her?" he asked.
Akpororo further noted that Real Warri Pikin had already apologised to her husband and subsequently addressed her fans over the controversy.
The comedian appealed to members of the public to move past the incident, suggesting that the backlash had become excessive after she had taken responsibility for her actions.
He captioned the video:
" @realwarripikin no apologies again, the only person you owe an apology is your husband."
