Referendum: Collation Of Results Enters Day Two

Several hours after voting in a referendum for the creation of six new regions in the country, the Electoral Commission is yet to finish collating the results from the various polling centres.Voting ended at 5:00 pm on Thursday.

As at 5:00 am early Friday morning, most of the collation centres had not finished putting together the results from the various centres.

The referendum was held for the creation of Bono East, Ahafo, North East, Savanna, Western North and Oti as new regions.

Voters within the districts and traditional areas earmarked for the new regions were to vote either YES or No.

Per the constitutional instrument governing the referendum, at least 50% of the voter population in those areas have to take part in the referendum, and the YES votes must be 80% or more before a region is created.

The campaigners for the news had complained about neglect in the allocation of the national cake hence their demand for administrative regions to help better their lots.

The government has promised to give each of the six yet to be created new regions a GHc 20 million see capital if they can sail through the referendum successfully.

Oti

Provisional results from the collation centre of the Oti Region show that five constituencies have had their results collated living eight constituencies and four electoral areas to go.

Results from the five constituencies show a resounding YES vote.

Savannah

At the collation centre for the proposed Savannah Region, results from two districts out of seven have so far been collated. Figures from the two districts show about a 99 per cent YES vote.
