The work on the rehabilitation of the Lower Volta Bridge, also known as Sogakope Bridge, is scheduled to be completed in six months time somewhere in May 2019.
The Bridge is a 650-meter long structure on the N1 highway which links the border town of Aflao to Accra through Sogakope to Sokpoe over the Volta River.
This was disclosed by the Volta regional Minister, Hon. Dr Archibald Letsa, who told the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, at its second annual meeting that a contract has been awarded for the project to commence.
The bridge was constructed between January 1965 and January 1967 by two German contractors.
In 2009, due to the deplorable state it was in, the bridge was described as a death trap.
There was also an appeal in 2013 by the residents of Sogakope to the Ghana Highways Authority to repair the rusted expansion and contraction joints of the bridge.
According to Dr. Letsa, the contract for the rehabilitation of the bridge has been awarded and work is expected to finish in 6 months.
