Kumasi, Sept.14, GNA - The Zongo Police in Kumasi have arrested the 25-year-old driver Yaw Agyapong whose vehicle allegedly killed Mr Edward Osei Kwaku, former Minister of Education, Youth and Sports in Kumasi on Tuesday evening.
The late Osei Kwaku was also the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Asokwa West.
The driver who fled after the accident was arrested at Effiduase in the Sekyere East district of Ashanti.
Briefing the Ghana News Agency on the accident on Wednesday, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Eddy Akoto, Manhyia Divisional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) said, at about 5.20 pm on Tuesday during the rush hour, the vehicle driven by Agyapong with two passengers on board veered off the road at the Roman Hill, hit a store opposite the Saint Peter's Mini Basilica before hitting Mr Osei Kwaku and pinned him against a wall.
ASP Akoto said the victim was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver in an interview attributed the accident to a brake failure and said he fled because he feared for his life. Meanwhile the body of the deceased has been deposited at KATH mortuary for autopsy.
