Kumasi Kejetia Project To Be Handed Over To KMA In August 2018

The Phase 1 of the Kejetia Market Project will be completed and handed over to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) at the end of August, 2018, according to the Brazilian construction firm, Contractor Engenharia Ltd, during a press briefing in Kumasi on Sunday, May 20, 2018.

The Project Director, Jorge Tavares de Almeida, who made the announcement said the project which is 95% completed, will pave way for the commencement of the Phase 2 and Phase 3, which involves the redevelopment of the main Kumasi Central Market.

The briefing, which was organized by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Local Government and Rural Development, who for the second time in the year visiting the project for inspection, was attended by the officials of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and Contractor Engenharia Ltd.

The project which costs $298 million and started in July 2015 was to be completed in January 2018 but was delayed due court matters arising from litigation between private land developers and KMA over pulling down of structures around the project.

The Kumasi redevelopment project is built in three phases, starting from the Kumasi Kejetia Bus Terminal, which is the phase one, at the cost of US$198 million, the second and third phases of the project, valued at US$100 million, would centre on works at the main Kumasi Central Market.

The Chief Executive for the KMA Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi, briefing the press expressed his appreciation to the Committee and the contractor, and believed the completion will ease both human and traffic congestion in the city.

He promised that occupants at the old Kejetia of having their share through validation process to be done by a committee set up by the Assembly.

“We have data for all those who were occupying those areas and promised that everyone will have his or her stall. This could be done through the validation processes to establish the owners, so we are assuring all not to panic. Some of those at the central market will also be moved to the Kejetia for the start of the second and final phases,” the Mayor assured.

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Kennedy Osei Nyarko said the Committee was impressed about the fast progress of the project and have noted down all the challenges facing the contractor.

He also expressed his joy over the deadline of August 2018 announced by the contractor on the completion and handing over of the project.
