Who Cares If Police Officers Are Being Killed By Armed Robbers?

Feature Article Who Cares If Police Officers Are Being Killed By Armed Robbers?
JAN 15, 2018 LISTEN

If you look at how a whole Police Inspector has had his head riddled with bullets, it is so disheartening and heartbreaking but who cares if a police officer has died in that manner? Trust me that no one cares. Even his own station people and commanders will soon forget him immediately he is lowered into the grave. I am really saddened but who cares whether I am sad or not? That always has been the days of our lives in the police -only few retire peacefully and go home.

A police officer has died and so what? The very duties that they went and died, by now another police officers have been deployed there so what is is the big deal here? Two police officers have been shot by armed robbers so should police work come to a halt? That is what they always ask us when we complain. They keep on telling us that police work will always go on whether we are dismissed, resign or die. We are told many times that it is only the poor man's child that becomes a police officer so who cares if a poor man's child is killed gruesomely by some unscrupulous armed robbers? Trust me that no one cares.

This man may be probably preparing to bow out of the police service in not too distant future after many years of commitments, sacrifices and dedications to policing but now look at how his life has ended so abruptly? You should by now go and see the wife and children as well as other family members? They are by now soaked in tears and griefs but who cares about them? How sad the way we lose our lives as police officers at times but who really care whether we are dying or not?

I always ask, how much is the life of a police officer worth? If we are to be weighed, what will be our worth considering the sacrifices we make for Ghanaians on a beam balance? What will be our price tag if we are to be showcased in a shop with values such as commitments, sacrifices and dedications to nation as price indicators? If an autioneer should dispose us off, how much would Ghanaians pay per our worth to them considering how we sacrifice our lives for them after we have depreciated? I guess the rhetorics are too many but that is it. Our value is priceless but I doubt a Ghanaian would be prepared to pay just 1ghc for the life of a police officer. I mean the same one 1ghc that we have always been accused of taking from drivers by the side of the road. Would a Ghanaian pay it for the life of a police officer to be spared? I don't think so.

Who cares if a bribe taker dies? The president- past, present and may be future? The journalist? Politicians-including ministers and parliamentarians who have police escorts and guards? The pastor? The Imam? The lawyer? The musician? The actor ? Who? Does the police officer even cares if his fellow police officer is killed in that manner? The list is endless but you know what? When all these people are attacked by an armed criminal, they even forget God who is the giver and taker of life but always remember to run to the police at the least opportunity. Whether they hate the police or not, at that moment, they would ran to the police and that is what inspires me to wanting to die for them but not because of their hypocrisy and shame. I have seen a lot of their hatred and hypocrisy so I also careless about them.

I have personally seen a situation where a police dispatch rider was crushed to death with an oncoming vehicle and drivers as well town folks took to streets and thanked God that a police officer has died in that manner. They even prayed that more police officers should die like that but hypocritically forgot that members of the same town before daybreak gave distress calls to the police that armed robbers have come to attack some of them and the police went to help them. They have soon forgotten that just last night the police saved them from the attacks of armed robbers but are rather jubilating over the death of another police officer. People do not remember the good works of the police so who cares if a police officer is killed by armed robbers with bullet riddled in his head? That is nobody's business so long as another police officer will come to rescue him when he is in trouble, that is fine. After all, all police officers in Ghana will not die at a go.

I have seen people disrespecting the police and used all unprintable words in dictionaries on the persons of police officers for sheer hypocrisy and hatred sake. They may be ministers of state, pastors, doctors, drivers, shoemakers, hawkers, chiefs and all the people that you can think of that come across the police officer in the course of discharging his daily duties. Interestingly these same people run to police when they are under attack or in trouble forgetting that it is the same police officer that they disrespected and insulted just a while ago. Ghanaians are always like that so let us not worry our heads over them and expect their sympathy. We don't need it.

I remember that driver that I boarded his vehicle from Somanya to Kpong who saw the obituary of a police officer and was so happy as if he has won lottery worth billion of cedis. He was so happy that a police officer has died and his poster has been pasted on a wall. He even wished that more police officers die so that he can be free on the road. That day, he insulted every police officer we met on the road till I got down at Kpong. I was surprised when he told me he doesn't like the police because of those who check over speeding on our roads. May be the police should allow him to speed on the road, kill himself and other people and after he is in the grave, he would like the police and appreciate them. Such a driver can intentionally kill a police officer at the checkpoint so does he care if the armed robbers have done it for him? He would rather be happy.

We live in a country that human rights activists are rather interested in pushing for the legalisation of homosexuality and other social vices but watch on whilst the police are dying almost everyday. The same people expect the police to protect gays and lesbians because of human rights as if the police officer is not a human being with rights too. They have the voice to call for legalisation of same-sex-marriages and raise issues of human rights against the police but lose their voices and consciences when a police officer is shot to death because he is not well protected and his photo is circulating on social media.

Yes! We are in a country where the journalist is only interested in capturing police officers taking monies by the side of the road and goes to sit on radio or television and say he is fighting corruption without investigating why the police officers are allegedly taking monies by the side of the road? The death of the police officer is not his concern and not a news that breaks so he doesn't care whether the police officer is well resourced or not.

The voice of some us is becoming too loud, saturated and loathsome in the ears of Ghanaians for constantly shouting from mountain tops when a police officer dies in line of duties but we will not stop the loud calls to fully equip and maintain the police officer. Just one day, Ghana will pay for continuously turning a blind a eye to what police officers are going through.

No one cares for us. We are on our own so apply your discretion properly. It's just a piece of advice just in case you have not been killed yet.
