Accra, Dec. 10, CDA Consult – The nation’s foremost indigenous Oil Marketing Company, Ghana Oil Company Limited (GOIL) has been tagged as Ghana’s Industry Gem and challenged to venture into upstream petroleum sector to propel it to higher heights.

Mr Freddy Blay, Acting Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) who on behalf of the government hailed the accolade on GOIL explained that the nation depends largely on OMC industry giant for maintaining stability in the downstream sector.

Mr Blay a former Board Chairman of GOIL stated at the 2017 Long Service Awards and End of Year Party organized at the weekend by the company to honour distinguished staffs that have work and continue to serve the company between ten and 35 years.

He explained that; GOIL has been adjudged as the Third Largest Company in Ghana by the Ghana Investment Promotion Council sponsored Ghana Club 100 list of companies. GOIL is now the second Best-listed Company on the Ghana Stock Exchange which it joined just a decade ago.

Mr Blay said for the second successive year, GOIL was adjudged as CIMG Petroleum Company of the Year; and to crown the year, GOIL received three distinguished awards at the 2017 Energy Awards: Brand of the Year; Best Bulk Distribution Company (BDC) – Goenergy; and the Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr Patrick Akpe Kwame Akorli was decorated as CEO of the Year Petroleum Sector.

The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) also acknowledged GOIL with an Excellence Award in the Oil and Gas Sector, whilst COPEC also decorated GOIL with three notable awards: Best Brand, Marketing Category; Best Fuel Quality Award, and again Mr Akorli the GOIL Group CEO and Managing Director was decorated as the Best CEO.

Mr. Blay, however, challenged GOIL, Board, Management and Staff to continue to work hard in the interest of the nation.

Mr. Akorli described the annual GOIL awards and dinner night as a unique opportunity to reconnect, unwinds and de-stress with co-workers, former staffs and stakeholders.

He noted that although significant progress has been made in the economic outlook of the country, “this has not reflected in the fortunes of the downstream petroleum industry. The downstream sector experiences a 10 percent drop in volumes due to mainly to illegal activities Petroleum Black Market dealers who smuggle the products in a bid to evade tax.

“This notwithstanding, GOIL has experienced a marginal growth and remains the biggest OMC in the country. Although it is difficult to rise to the top, it is more difficult to remain up there…the Competition is still stiff in the downstream petroleum sector, therefore GOIL cannot afford to rest”.

The GOIL Group CEO, therefore, encouraged management and staff to continue to give off their very best in the coming years as the company continues to compete aggressively with multinationals; “but we will continue to rely on ourselves for the necessary innovations as a home-grown brand to remain at the top”.

Mr. Akorli said GOIL is scaling up its health and safety measures; as recent events in the industry demands that; “we must show strength and character that we are market leaders and can indeed retain our position as market leaders”.

Mr. Kwamena Bartels, Board Chairman of GOIL pledged the commitment of the Board to work with management and staffs to propel the company to higher heights.

He lauded the effort of the immediate past Board for moving the company forward and the tremendous achievement.
