Late Capt Maxwell A. Mahama

I used to love the peaceful nature of Ghana and would always say I am proud to be a Ghanaian where people value peace over everything. I cannot say that today because the internal peace within the country has broken. War and conflicts are not the only things that destroys peace. Lawlessness is one of the major breakers of peace and is increasing in Ghana every moment. Ghanaians do not feel safe anymore.

In my opinion, lawlessness is when criminals can commit crime and be set free, when people in power and with influence and money cannot be accused of any crime or be set free because of their background. Lawlessness is when citizens, politicians and crime fighters like prosecutors, judges, police and military`s lives are being threaten and some killed and the perpetrators are set free because of their social, political and financial background, and when citizens, security agencies and politicians are bias, corrupt and not just. Lawlessness is when citizens takes the law into their hands by punishing and killing criminals themselves. lawlessness is when the media let themselves to be diverted of important issues and start reporting on trivial ones to cover up a story. My heartfelt condolence goes to Captain Maxwell Mahama`s family. He died because of the increasing lawlessness in Ghana, a victim to a collective crime.

Every crime is a crime and must be treated as such. Murder is murder irrespective of the name given to the act that leads to the death of the victim. If it is a crime to take someone`s life, then anyone or any particular group that takes someone`s life must be charged of murder unless such acts are approved by the law. As a citizen I believe in collective responsibility and everyone in Ghana should perform their duties diligently to restore peace in the country and to avoid and prevent injustice.

Citizens must respect the laws of the country by giving the security personnel the chance to perform their duties. Every Ghanaian should try to cooperate with the security agencies by giving them information required to fight crime and trusting them to do their jobs without fear or favour. Let us be law abiding citizens.

Security agencies should be bold and firm in fighting crime against individuals, group or the state. No criminal should be set free irrespective of the persons political, social or financial background. A crime is a crime and must be treated as such. If a person commits a crime, he/she should pay for it. If citizens feel like only the powerless and poor pays for their crimes or pay for crimes they did not even commit then people will loose faith in the security agencies and crime will increase because people may want to take revenge if they feel an injustice treatment. Security agencies should be an independent body with zero political influence so that they can carry out their duties without the fear of loosing their jobs or being demoted.

Politicians should stop abusing their powers by influencing everything in Ghana. You are given the mandate to lead and protect the citizenry and not to make them feel insecure and powerless. Anyone who commits a crime should be allowed to pay for it irrespective of their political background. Politicians should let the media, security agencies, the court and any other independent department in Ghana operate as an independent body and make their own decisions with zero political influence. Politicians must remember that they are responsible for all Ghanaians and not their party sympathizers and should treat every Ghanaian fairly. Let independent bodies operate as such and nothing less or more.

Mr President, captain Mahama`s death is a wake up call to you and your team that Ghanaians are no more safe and crime is increasing in the country for people think they can commit crime without being caught or charged. Those responsible for his death must pay for their crimes and it will be suicidal to declare it as a foolish case (no evidence) just like what has been happening in the country for sometime now. Captain Mahama`s family must be taken care of and the kids and their mother should be given special attention. Ghana must become the father, husband and son that the family lost. A trust fund should be set to cater for the childrens education and needs from now till tertiary and until they find jobs to take care of themselves. No amount of help and money can lesson the pain in the heart of the family but the least you can do as a president is to see to it that they never luck anything in their lifetime.

Captain Mahama`s death is untimely and unfortunate, the act is considered as brutal murder and no human-being deserves such treatment.
