Mobile telecommunication giant, MTN has taken internet service to a higher level with the rollout of its US$67.5 million dollars 4G LTE service in the Ghana.

Mr. Ebenezer Twum Asante, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana said they are the first mobile operator to launch 4G LTE services in Ghana about six months after they were allocated the 4G license.

According to him, the full commercialization of the 4G internet service will be the next game changer.

“Our 4G rollout is a key driver of the growth of Value Added Services business and MTN business. We will also have to keep on driving the momentum around key trends such as video streaming, Internet of Things [IoT], and mobile payments,” he stated.

Mr. Asante noted that this year they are investing $96 million dollars in their network to improve on its availability and reliability.

He added that the investment package is made up of $62 million in the traditional network, $16 million in IT, and $18 million LTE deployment.

Mr. Asante posited that their total infrastructure investments from 2006 to date are over US$ 2.5 billion.

“The strategic and consistent investments we make have of course also contributed to our growth,” he stated.

The MTN boss indicated that their robust 2G and 3G network, three state –of –the –art data centers, the West African Cable System [WACS] and over 5000 kilometer of fiber continues to deliver extensive, reliable, fast voice and data services to Ghanaians.

According to him, MTN inherited 2.5 million subscribers when they took ownership of Scancom in 2006 and by the end of 2007 the company recorded 4 million subscribers.

He added that the figure doubled to 8 million subscribers in December 2009 and two years later, in 2011, they achieved the 10 million subscriber milestone.

“We reached 12 million in March 2013 and 15 million in July of 2015, however, MTN has passed the 17 million subscriber milestone,” he emphasized.
