President John Mahama hasinaugurateda $90million Savanna Diamond Cement (SDCL) factory for production to begin at Buipe in the Northern Region. The factory will employ for 200 persons directly and 400 persons indirectly.
According to President Mahama, “Savanna Diamond Cementnot only produces cement but produces cement using its own clinker that is made from limestone mined here in Buipe.”
During the inauguration, the Managing Director, Mr. Prasad Mortapati said the factory has the potential to generate employment for the community as the cement factory has an installed capacity to produce 440,000 tons of cement per annum (tpa).
He added that the SDCL is one of the three cement factories by the group with the other two being Diamond Cement Ghana Ltd (DCGL), Aflao and Western Diamond Cement Ltd, Takoradi.
Mr. Prasad said that the inauguration of the cement factory called for a jointly funded collaboration with GRIDCo which established a substation for a three phase supply.
The substation has a capacity of 25megawatts out of which SDCL needs only 7 MW and the remaining 18 MW will be available for the community.
He said they believe in the philosophy that industries have social responsibilities. “Our industrial ventures are designed to translate this philosophy to suit the social environs”
Mr. Prasad added thatthe company has undertaken many projects to support the Buipe community where it operates, including the construction of a six-unit classroom and borehole for the senior high technical school at Buipe. He pledged the company’s continuous support for the community in the areas of health and education.
President Mahama commended management of Savanna Diamond Cement stating that the government would continue to support the company.
