Now It’s All Clear, Oko Vanderpuije Has A Lawless Mandate

Now Its All Clear, Oko Vanderpuije Has A Lawless Mandate
14.01.2015 LISTEN

I do not know if Mr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, the well known bearded Mayor of Accra is a Ghanaian, lives in Ghana and believes in the rule of law. Again I do not know whether he has become that powerful to be above the law or perhaps his bear has grown to the extent that it has given him a hedge over the law.

I am not by these forming a new opinion on Mr. Vanderpuije, neither am I trying to project a new personality for him with my delusion and confusion.

I am merely wondering over his actions even as an honourable and major. For me his aggressiveness and the manner in which he goes about instilling what he calls discipline seem to suggest a man of his own world. A world in which he is at liberty to bring people to justice in a manner he deems right and satisfactory without recourse to the laws of the land. At the end he walks about freely with his job intact so he continues abusing the very people out of whose sweat he feeds.

Often I am tempted to call him a tyrant in a military regime. But then I remember this is Ghana. A country built on the foundations of freedom and justice and deeply rooted in the rule of law. And that appointees like Mr. Vanderpuijie who goes about taking care of things themselves does so out of 'supportive impunity'.

Last year when he physically assaulted a trotro driver for merely honking his car horn I compared him to Rob Ford and Justin Trudeau. Today it seems I was much more considerate.

We are not even into the middle of the first month in the New Year and this man is already making the headlines and of course for the wrong reasons.

Thankfully his New Year episodes have not all been badly. They have unravelled the mystery behind his conducts and re-established his true identity. He is the city mayor with the responsibility to take care of things himself. Going further with his revelations on the Super Morning Show this Tuesday which eventually landed him another headline, Mr. Vanderpjuije said, with the incident that happen during the clean up exercise he owned up to it and that the driver was indiscipline and so he took care of it himself. Really, is Oko V now the law?

To speak for himself Mr. Vanderpuije says “When I am in public, I personally have the responsibility as the Chief Executive to make sure that nobody gets away with any action or activity that is detrimental to public safety and to the advancement of the city of Accra,” This should have ended it all in this piece. But in our time of earth-shattering prophecies I will have to make one for the Mayor of Mayor and it is this simple: Mr Oko Vanderpjuije will take care of something soon himself since he is the law. But I pray that taking care will not take of him in the end.
